Three officials of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Ojere, Abeokuta, have been remanded in prison on Tuesday.

An Abeokuta Chief Magistrate’s court ordered that the three union officials, Odeogbola James, 55; Egbewunmi Olalekan, 44, and Taiwo Oladipupo, 38, be held in prison custody for allegedly stealing money belonging to the First City Monument Bank (FCMB) and NASU, MAPOLY chapter, between between 2008 and 2011.

The accused are being tried for stealing, conspiracy and concealing relevant documents relating to the disbursement of funds, property of FCMB and NASU.

Earlier, the court had heard from the prosecutor, ASP Banji Sangotokun, that the accused persons held privileged  positions in the union as the President, Treasurer, and Secretary, when they committed the crime

He explained that the accused defrauded FCMB while pretending to be borrowing money on behalf of NASU, an offence which contravened Sections 516, 385, 390(8),(6) of the Criminal Code Law of Ogun State, 2006.

“The first accused, James was the president of the union, he collected N19.4 million, while Olalekan and Oladipupo, collected the sum of N17.9 million each and absconded with the money, without distributing it to members of the Union as agreed,” Sangotokun said.

The case was adjourned the case until the 5th of June.
